Director's Note
I’m thrilled to be directing ‘He’s Not Gay, He’s Just my Brother’ by Ryan Lithgow.
In this play I wanted to explore in depth the idea of family. For most of us, we love our family unconditionally for the constancy and support they provide us. However, when you have a mix of generations, genders, wealth and lived experiences between you, there are bound to be differences of opinions. This can make certain conversations difficult to broach: such as, political parties, social injustice, economics, gender identity and, in the case of this play, sexuality. The fear of rejection or confrontation can be enough to stifle these questions that we are longing to ask. But, if we let ourselves be truly vulnerable and trust our loved ones with our voices and thoughts, will it pull us closer together or push us further apart? And will we regret the things we never said when time has run out?
I have had the most fantastic time during this rehearsal period due to the amazing cast and creative team. With this being my directing debut, it was daunting to say the least. But everyone involved has been incredibly supportive and I could not be prouder to be part of the Not So Nice! Team. If audiences enjoy the show as much as I have loved creating it, they will be in for a fantastic night!
